FAQs
Q: I’ve practiced Pilates for years at other studios, why do I have to take an introductory class at Pillar of Strength?
A: We believe that Pilates is for everyone, but not every instructor is. To ensure that we’re a good match, we require all new clients—even those who have practiced Pilates for decades—to take an introductory class with us. And at only $35, you’re getting a private session at a deep discount!
Q: I’m new to Pilates and/or GYROTONIC® exercise but I’m in great shape and very athletic. Why do I have to take five orientation sessions before I can take one of your other classes?
A: To get the full benefit of our classes at Pillar of Strength, you must be familiar with the equipment, props and terminology we use, the pace at which our classes move collectively, and the general format of each session. Our orientation package is designed to prepare you for our other classes, and ensure you get a great workout and have fun, rather than feeling uncomfortable, confused and frustrated.
Q: How long is each class?
A: All of our classes are 55 minutes long.
Q: Do I need to make a reservation to attend a class?
A: Yes! In order for our instructors to teach their best—and to give you a safe, effective workout—they need to know which clients are signed up for a specific session and how many clients will be in class.
Q: What should I wear?
A: First and foremost, be comfortable! We recommend wearing form-fitting clothing—think yoga tights/pants and tank tops, or shorts with compression tights underneath—so our instructors can readily spot and correct misalignment to ensure your safety. Most of our clients practice barefoot (we clean all the equipment after each session) but you’re welcome to wear socks with grip on the bottom. To avoid scratching and puncturing our equipment, we ask that you avoid wearing clothing with zippers or buttons.
Q: What should I bring and what amenities do you provide?
A: Most of our clients bring water bottles to stay hydrated during class, but we have a water dispenser and small cups available at the studio. We also provide small hand towels to keep your sweat in check. So, just bring yourself—dressed and ready to move!
Q: What if I have a health condition or an injury?
A: Because Pilates and GYROTONIC® exercise focus on maintaining proper physical alignment and can be modified for virtually any individual, they are very safe forms of exercise. However, they are exercise—not stretching or physical therapy—and only you and your doctor can determine whether they are suitable for your current physical condition. Please consult a medical expert if you have concerns about starting or continuing to practice Pilates and/or GYROTONIC® exercise. Always inform your instructor prior to class about any condition or prescribed drug that may affect your physical state.
Q: Can I do Pilates and/or GYROTONIC® exercise if I’m pregnant?
A: Absolutely! Pilates and GYROTONIC® exercise can be wonderful complements to your pregnancy, and great preparation for your delivery as they helps strengthen your abdominal muscles and enhance your overall wellbeing. While it depends on the individual, we’ve had clients practice Pilates and GYROTONIC® exercise right up to their due dates and return to Pillar of Strength just a few weeks after delivery. Our instructors are trained in pre- and post-natal instruction and can modify your session to ensure a safe, comfortable, effective workout.
Q: What’s your cancellation policy?
A: We get it: Life happens. But we’re running a business and have to pay our studio fees and the cost of our instructors’ time. To help us keep business running smoothly, we require 24 hours’ notice for all class cancellations or to reschedule a class. In the event you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice—or simply don’t show up for class—we will charge you the full price of your session.
