When it came time to create a name for my studio back in 2010, I wanted something that represented me, my approach to Pilates and fitness, and my personal and professional values. I couldn’t help but feel a little overwhelmed thinking that finding a name for all THAT would be a tall order.
Fortunately, I’m not intimidated by tall things.
As those who know me can attest, I’m hard to miss in a crowd. Ever since high school, I’ve towered over others—particularly other women—measuring 6 feet tall. While it made for a few awkward years growing up, I’m proud of my stature, and the notion of standing tall and strong stuck with me as I contemplated a name for my business. What else is tall, strong, stable and perfectly aligned? A pillar! And the Pillar of Strength brand was born.
The pillar analogy works in so many other ways as well. In Pilates and GYROTONIC exercise, proper alignment is the foundation of our practice. We’re constantly working to ensure that our clients are stacked: That their shoulders are stacked above their hips; their spines are aligned and supported; their cores are engaged. To be fully functional and structurally sound, a pillar must be stacked, with its capital (that’s fancy architectural-speak for the top of a pillar) stacked directly above its shaft, which is, in turn, stacked directly above its base. People need this same kind of alignment to be fully functional and structurally sound.
The pillar is also a nod to the strength of my convictions and my unwavering belief in the importance of health, fitness and well-being. This is what drives me personally and professionally, and it’s something I strive to spark in my clients. I want them to recognize their worth and value as people, and a great place to start is with the physical form. When you feel good, strong and healthy, you can be your best self. You can go forth and enjoy life—and bring joy to other peoples’ lives as well.
Finally, I chose an ionic pillar for the Pillar of Strength logo because the swirly top reminds me of the swirling motion frequently used in GYROTONIC exercise, while the straight vertical lines in the column remind me of a Pilates reformer.
So, now that you know the origins of the Pillar of Strength brand, why not visit the studio or check out our classes, and start your own journey towards health, fitness, strength and flexibility?
It’s a great way to be your best self and become a Pillar of Strength.
